The University of Technology invites multicultural community members and leaders to join their speakers panel conversation featuring policy experts, academics, students, grassroots leaders, human rights activists and the business community on topics of national and international interests.
The Women’s Empowerment and Leadership Development for Democratisation Programme (WELDD) is a consortium project of Women Living Under Muslim Laws (WLUML), Shirkat Gah – Women’s Resource Centre, and the Institute for Women’s Empowerment (IWE). To mark the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence Campaign, WELDD will produce a series on its blogspace ‘Public Square’. On each of the 16 Days we will publish a blog by a woman who has worked with our programme, which will discuss their work for women’s empowerment and/or reflections on women’s rights in their countries. The blogs will also address the intersection between these issues and questions of militarism. Bloggers will be grassroots women activists and advocates from Tunisia, Egypt, Indonesia, Nigeria, Sudan, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iraq, and Syria.
November 2014 Gender-themed Workshops New Delhi, India
In the lead-up to the 25th of November, Indian partner organisations will be holding two workshops in New Delhi, India. The first workshop will focus on masculinities and gender justice and will include two film screenings, followed by a discussion. The second workshop will be an interactive workshop exploring the relationship between power and gender.
November 25 – December 10 2014 Online Campaign India The Red Elephant Foundation will be hosting an online campaign, featuring movie screenings, training and advocacy, throughout the entire 16 Days Campaign.
November 27 – December 3 2014 Essay and short film competition Nepal (Kathmandu, Dolakha,Baglung, Chitwan, Lalitpur)
YUWA, in partnership with U.S. Embassy Youth Council and Youth Activists Leadership Council (YALC) will be doing an essay competition and short movie competition. The best entries selected will be a given prize, followed by a screening of the short film entries.
Between November 25 and December 10, the Visionary Foundation Pakistan, in partnership with RutgersWPF, Chanan Development Association, Dance4Life Pakistan and the Strengthening Participatory Organization, will be organising interactive theatre in Gadap Town, Pakistan, with the aim of raising awareness on early age marriage, domestic violence, female education, sexual harassment and corporal punishment within the community.
November 2014 Gender Education Workshops Various Locations, Cameroon
Cameroonian organisation, Gender Empowerment and Development, will be organising workshops within schools in locations scattered across the country. Workshop participants will discuss how the culture of militarism is comprised of a set of values rooted in rigid patriarchal constructions of gender, followed by a discussion regarding the ways that both teachers and students can collectively move towards a more violent free environment where gender equality is a reality, and where a peaceful environment is created in schools through the reduction of gender-based violence.
December 1 – December 10 Public Gender Training Sessions Cameroon (Buea, Munyenge, Bafia, Ngusi)
Vision in Action Cameroon, in partnership with both public and private secondary schools, will be organising gender training sessions with school pupils. Topics such as gender based violence, gender and HIV, Human Rights, youth and the law, sexual exploitation, and sex trafficking will be covered during the sessions.
November 2014 Discussion Bukavo, the Democratic Republic of Congo
Feminist organisation SOFEDEC will be holding a discussion on the topic of violence perpetrated by state actors and the ways that violence perpetrated by state actors are linked to sexual violence that occurs during and after conflict.
December 4 2014 An Insider Story: Women, Peace & Security in The Netherlands The Hague, the Netherlands
Next year it is the 15th anniversary of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 about Women, Peace and Security. Great timing to have a closer look at the value of this resolution for Women, Peace and Security within the Netherlands.In times of armed conflict, women, women’s organizations and activists working for peace and human rights face many challenges related to peace and security. Through the National Action Plan on ‘1325’, the Netherlands supports women in conflict, with an emphasis on women’s leadership in conflict areas. Apart from its implementation abroad, the resolution also affects Women, Peace and Security issues within the Dutch borders. During the panel discussion, we will look at what Resolution 1325 means in the Dutch context, specifically for refugees, women peace activists and human rights defenders coming from conflict areas. How does 1325 affect Dutch responsibilities to protect women refugees within the Netherlands? How does 1325 support leadership of women peace activists in the Netherlands and what does this mean for peace in their country of origin? What is going well and what can be done better?
November 29 2014 Reclaim the Night March Writer’s Square, Belfast, Northern Ireland
Reclaim the Night – Belfast are organising a march on the night of the 29th November to raise awareness of street harassment and gender violence. This march, the first in what is to be an annual event, will showcase the need for action against gender based violence and so support in numbers is requested to highlight the need for action.We march to demand our right to be free from the fear and reality of rape, street harassment, stalking and all other gender violence that affects women and the LGBTQ community.The march will be through the city centre, stopping briefly at the Laganside Magistrates Courts. Groups will meeting at Albert Clock and the march will end at Writers Square. There will be various speakers, including Lord Mayor Nichola Mallon, to speak on the issue.
November 25 – December 10 2014 Exhibition of Solidarity Various Locations, the United Kingdom
Arts for You and Yes Matters are preparing for November 25 with a series of workshops to explore women’s experiences and ideas through creativity to create an exhibition of solidarity. The exhibition will open on the 25th November in a central location, coinciding with some street activism with a pop up exhibition going up on the town hall steps and a pledge tree to move to different venues across the 16 days to maximise publicity and conversations. In addition, there will be a Reclaim the Streets march across town to raise awareness of street harassment, exploitation and objectification. Bolton Council will be promoting the white ribbon campaign.
As part of this year’s 16 Days Campaign Against Gender Based Violence, the Association for Women’s Rights in Development (AWID) is once again launching an online tribute that expands upon the 2013 Tribute to Feminists and Women Human Rights Defenders (WHRDs) Who Are No Longer With Us. The 2014 Tribute will be launched on November 25th, 2014 Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and will end on December 10, 2014 International Human Rights Day.The Tribute honors all feminists and WHRDs who are no longer with us and their work; raises awareness of the increasing levels of violence and repression faced by many WHRDs around the world; and highlights the need to politicize and support self-care, increased protection and safety for WHRDs.
November 25 2014 Culture and Violence Against Women & Girls: A Connection? Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA
The North Carolina Chapter of UN Women/USNC and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies, UNC Chapel Hill, invite you to an event in recognition of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence Campaign on Nov. 24, 2014 at 7pm. This evening will focus on the relationship between culture and violence against women and girls, internationally and locally. We will hear from two compelling speakers and screen a documentary. To support Beverly Goll-Yekeson’s efforts to send the survivors of sexual violence in Liberia back to school, we will be accepting school supplies such as pencils, spiral-notebooks, and personal-size hand sanitizers. Beverly is the Founder and President of Liberia Crisis Center for Abused Women and Children and a North Carolina citizen. The event will be held at the Johnson Center, Room 039, UNC Chapel Hill, 218 E. Franklin Street, Chapel Hill. This event is free of charge and open to the public.
In honour of the 16 Days, PROOF: Media for Social Justice will feature organisations working in the United States and around the world to end violence against women and offer assistance to survivors. Additionally, PROOF will highlight particular actions that individuals can take in support of this movement.
